About

Orknet was first mooted in 1995, when two Kirkwall Town Band members, David Griffith and Tony Whenman, got into discussions about the amazing potential of the World Wide Web.

The company was founded in 1996, offering web design and hosting.

Initially focusing on the Orkney market, there was much scepticism at the start, and it took a while before business picked up, but, over the years, Orknet has been responsible for putting hundreds of Orkney businesses and organisations on the web.

David eventually took over the partnership and branched out into domain registrations, support and training.

With a client base stretching from Shetland to Portugal and the USA, it is a truly international business now.

Orknet’s first employee was Sigurd Towrie, who managed Orkney’s first official web portal.

When Sigurd moved to The Orcadian, the partnership continued when Orknet hosted their new website.

Over the years, David has been involved in many projects at The Orcadian and, when he was considering the future of the company, it seemed natural to look towards a closer partnership between the two businesses.

With a new talented team of web developers and graphic designers at The Orcadian, a merger seemed the perfect opportunity to expand Orknet’s pioneering work.

There are companies out there which are very keen to get new customers but which provide no after-sales service, so clients never receive the same enthusiastic treatment again.

We will not only value new customers, but also truly treat our existing customers with the same loyalty and importance.

The Orknet team certainly wants to help and make sure you are happy, no matter how simple or complex your online plans are.
